Para-what?

Paraphila is an umbrella term used to cover the family of philias. In sexology, it is sometimes more widely used to cover atypical sexual interests or deviances. While the word paraphilia may seem alien, the philias it encompasses may seem slightly familiar. Think fetishes and unusual desires and you're on the right track!

Virginia police on the hunt for the buttock slasher

In the US, police are on the hunt for a man accused of having slashed with a razor the buttocks of at least nine women since February in Virginia's Fairfax County.

The man, known as the 'Buttock Slasher' has been identified as 40-year-old Johnny Guillen Pimentel. He is suspected of carrying out attacks on at least nine women between January and July of this year.
According to the Peruvian press, the Peruvian man is probably suffering from a paraphilia...

The Lady Garden

My garden is lacking something: a green thumb to be precise. Sensing a lack of pizzazz in my garden, I turned to the internet for inspiration and found myself looking at my garden in a new light. Gardening blogger This Garden Is Illegal writes of her garden as a virtual 'fetish ball'...without the chains, whips and rubber I hope! Of course, distraction set in and I wondered whether or not there was a true fetish to be found in the garden and outdoors.

Dogging, of course, springs to mind, however that's vanilla and and I prefer writing about rasberry nipple! While hay fever season brings the sneezing fetishists into their element, it also tempts those with anthnolagnia...sexual arousal from flowers. While the scent of pressed flowers in a perfume or aftershave may attract many of us to a potential bedmate, I'm curious as to whether the sight of a flower can send someone into a sexual frenzy.
While Valentine's Day sends nearly every woman in the West into rose-lust, it's more about the convention of romance than sexual arousal. I'm still on a hunt to find someone who is aroused in such a way purely from appearance or scent of a flower....Could it be you?

Frame Your Desires

Hitting the town at the weekend with friends, I was approached with a friend's dilemma: glasses or no glasses? Without glasses, she was aware she couldn't see. However, she believed that with them perched on her nose, she wouldn't attract men. Most dilemmas are best solved through compromise, so I suggested a combination: glasses til the prey was in her sights followed by the specs being secreted in my handbag. She invoked memories of my childhood desire to be one of the few, one of the bespeckled. Looking back now, it was an odd want: a craving for imperfection. Perhaps I desired to inspire thoughts of myself as an intelligent bookworm or to stand apart from the crowd, but with near-perfect vision, it was never meant to be. While my urge was short-lived, for some their desire for corrective vision in themselves and others is a long-term obsession.

Glasses fetishism describes an attraction or arousal towards people wearing prescription eyewear or sunglasses, or in some cases, the act of wearing spectacles. Occasionally, even the glasses themselves as a stand-alone object are fetishised. While it is not technically a paraphilia, rare, extreme forms of this fetish verge on parphiliac.

Initially, I admit, this may be a difficult fetish to relate to. However, anyone who has had a fantasy involving the headmistress or master discipling them, will most likely imagine them in glasses. Or perhaps your taste is more in corrupting a schoolboy or transforming an uptight bespeckled bookworm into a wild, crazy nymph. Perhaps if eyes are the windows to the soul, glasses frame its desires.

While the glasses themselves can be a turn on for some, fetishists cite a variety of sources for arousal including:
  • watching women struggle - either with losing their glasses or adjusting to a new pair

  • spectacles slipping down the nose

  • the cleaning of smudged lenses

  • seeing a person wearing or manipulating eyewear both sexually and non-sexually
Erotic fiction such as Specs4Ever's tale "A Town Called Myopia" tittilates the glass fetishist through writing. Accompanying this, a wide range of DVDs are available ranging from the mangaka title "The Sky over my Spectacles" to "Specs Appeal 9" which features a memorable catchphrase: "Spray my glasses with hot jizm!". These sorts of 'money shots' feature strongly on the many websites which cater to girls with glasses (GWGs) such as the imaginatively titled Jizz on My Glasses site. Forums, such as Eye Scene, which describes itself as a 'different outlook on eyewear', encourage an open discussion for all things optical.

Some fetishists wear eyeglasses - sometimes even over contacts. This practice, glasses over contacts (GOC), requires the use of contact lenses prescribed at a strength which allows the user to see clearly through strong eyeglasses. For some hopeful fetishists, they let their eyes go overcorrected for a length of time so that stronger glasses will be necessary.

Czech GOC-fetishist Bobby Laurel believes that his fetish for thick, strong lenses is similar to those who enjoy pretending to be an amputee or handicapped. On his website, he writes: "All of them pretend a kind of disability. Please, do not misunderstand the concept of this pretending. They do not do it to lodge a fraudulent claims, to get benefits, to get money, to beg etc. No! They wheel or crutch just for the pleasure (Yes, they like it!) ... Those pretenders and us - the GOC wearers - are the same kind of "freaks". None of us know exactly what happened in our brains that we like pretending to be disabled. We just like it. Please, realise we do not harm anybody. We do not wish that the other people really needed thick glasses, wheelchairs or crutches. Of course, we like the people who happened to need the stuff. They attract us, it is true, it often makes us excited or even sexually stimulated when we see a person who wears strong glasses or needs crutches or a wheelchair."

Research into this realm of fetishism (as well as many others) is sparse. Perhaps it is the fact it is not as well-known or more likely that it rarely impacts on anyone apart from the fetishist.

Currently, a group of European researchers have joined forces to investigate fetishism in the hopes of increasing understanding. The Internet Sex Survey Initiative are looking into various fetishes including glasses fetishism. So, if the site of a face framed in specs warms your loins, take part in their survey by clicking: www.intercult.su.se/ISSI/sur...rvey.html.

So...glasses or no glasses? I'm not sure there is a right answer to that one. As with any desire or want, it's personal. With age, poor eyesight soon follows. But I don't think I will fret - for some men still do make passes at girls in glasses.

Get Pampered

Last night, a friend brought over some dvds she had purchased on Ebay. So, there I was sat, popcorn a-popping in the microwave as she set up the dvd. I love a good comedy, particularly of the black variety, however, nothing quite prepared me for what was about to be shown. The title, The Babysitter, really should have been a dead giveaway - oh and the plain brown wrapper she pulled the dvd out of too! Bless, nothing says friendship like porn on a Saturday night.

As she skipped scenes in the film, I saw the expected sights - forty-something daddy showing a twenty-something dressed up as a babysitter the ways of lurve. I probed for what was so interesting in the last scene but my friend remained tight lipped.

As the scene came on, I was in a bit of a state of shock. Let me set it up for you. As the babysitter sits watching a horror film, she hears a noise coming from the babies' bedroom. She heads up and discovers they're missing and proceeds to search the house for them. Upon reaching the living room, she is greeted by two full-grown men gurgling dressed as babies. Yes, babies - we're talking nappies, bonnets and bottles. Oh, and erections...must not forget them. They proceed to attack her but I think that's about as detailed as you need.

I like to think of myself as open-minded, but I have to say I was left a bit shocked by the scene. It wasn't the sex - it was your standard run-of-the-mill hard-core in that department. However, the nappies just left me feeling a bit, erm, confused.

Apparently, when it comes to paraphilas and fetishes, diaper fetishes and infantilism are quite common. Confessions of a Phone Actress writes in her blog: "One of the most common fetishes I get a request for besides the usual stocking, shoes and domination is the infantile fetish. I can’t pretend to understand it, but I’m going to try. In one night I had two clients request this fantasy. My first client wanted to be changed and breastfed. The other wanted to be changed also, but wanted his ba-ba and binky."

Understanding Infantilism was set up in 1995 to support adult babies (ABs) and diaper lovers (DLs) and to help the public comprehend and accept this behaviour. They explain infantilism as: "a deep and lasting urge with a specific focus. Generally, it is a drive to wear diapers, and may include dressing and acting as a baby as well. Infantilism isn't a fetish, but may coexist with diaper fetishes."

To the onlooker, the dividing line between infantilism and diaper fetishism is a blurry one, which makes their codependence understandable. Sex is a primal need for man - after all, we are but animals who have been designed to reproduce our genetic code. Infantilism appears to neglect the sexual function - rather it relies on the satisfaction of the ego and the whole self. Diaper fetishism is purely about the view of the diaper as a sexualized object. It does not require the nurture and roleplay of fetishism.

The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders classifies infantilism as masochism. However, while there is a desire by the AB to be controlled and be dominated by the carer, there is normally no desire for harm - only for nurture. They long to return to the days of childhood when our needs were tended to completely by another - including toiletting and feeding.

Sites, like Infantilism.Org, allow ABs and DLs the chance to speak openly about their desires, activities and products, such as Big Baby Binky pacifiers.

So, why do people become fixated in this way? The jury is out on that one but some believe it may be due to stress, environmental factors, learned behaviours or even genetics. Infantilist Tommy has developed a theory that infantilism may be due to childhood stress. While he is not a professional, he does have practical experience with infantilism as well as contact with other ABs and DLs through parties he promotes on his website.

Yes, parties. Forget the champagne and dancing, bottles of warm milk and children's balloon games are the way it's done. For more information about them, check out Tristan Taormino's 2002 article on the Village Voice website.

Even "nurseries" are available for the baby who finds himself without care. Although I'm not sure Nanny Popins will be going on my list of babysitters any time soon. Her specialty is "progressive therapy to transform her Lickle Adult Babies into Lickle Prissy Sissy Girls."

While a man in a nappy - or myself in one - just doesn't appeal, I can relate to their yearning for nurture. It is a basic human need - for many of us there is nothing better than feeling looked after. Although, it must be said that many are satisfied with a much less extreme dose of it.

Harmatophilia Heaven

Anxious about your abilities in the sack? Just remember, the worse you are the bigger a smile you'll bring to a harmatophiliac!

Defined quite simply, harmatophilia is sexual arousal from the mistakes of others. This widespread philia predominantly affects males.

Using a more broad definition, one could say that a vast majority of men prefer (and perhaps are even aroused by) having a partner with less sexual experience or competence then themselves. Just listen to a man wax lyrical about taking a girl's 'cherry' and you get the picture.

Now, whether the cause of this arousal is biological, purely to strengthen a fragile ego or to boost self esteem is unknown, but an American study seems to demonstrate how men and women may subconciously play into this need for male dominance in the sexpertise stakes.

Psychologist Norman R Brown and his team at the University of Michigan have carried out a series of surveys to investigate the great divide between the number of sexual partners claimed by men and women.

In one 2006 survey of 2065 male and female sexually active forty-somethings, they found that women claimed an average of 8.6 sexual partners versus the male claim of 31.9. Brown and his team delved deeper later in the survey by asking the participants to rate the truthfulness of their responses. 5% admitted lying and a further 10% said they were aware their answer was inaccurate.

Brown determined from his study that a large reason for the discrepancy was due to calculation methods. It seems women rely on 'raw count' while men rely on a similarly flawed method: approximation.

It seems whether male or female, we're all playing within the rules of Harmatophilia Heaven.
